"In Service To All"

The Knights of Columbus has been called "the strong right arm of the Church," and has been praised by popes, presidents and other world leaders, for support of the Church, programs of evangelization and Catholic education, civic involvement and aid to those in need.
Here you will find out a little about how many Knights dedicate themselves "In Service To All". These Knights volunter in a broad range of services that help many in our Parishes and Communities. They do this not for recognition, but to enhance thier own faith and the faith of those they touch.

Knights Annual Labor Day BBQ

The Knights of Columbus Council 893’s Labor Day BBQ has continued to grow since we started several years ago. The success has been twofold: First the hard work of all the Knights and volunteers. This starts with planning and purchasing all of the food and supplies, the guys who spend all night at St Bedes cooking and then those who prepare the food and plates for pick up.  Second and most important is the support of our parishioners and church family who purchase our BBQ year after year...
We hope you enjoy your Holiday and your meals. Thank you again and know that it is thru your support and donations that we are able to continue our charitable work.

Knights to Cook for 2011 St Bede Fall Festival

Fr. Carucci once said “the Knights of Columbus are always looking for a reason to fire up their grill” and this year is no acceptation. The grill will barely be cooled down from The Knights Annual Labor Day BBQ before we fire it up again for the 2011 St Bedes Fall Festival. This year’s festival is scheduled for Sunday Oct. 16th, 2011. The Parish Council has kindly asked if we would again cook for this year’s festival. The obvious answer is “of course we will”. This will be our 3rd year cooking for the school festival which is put together by St Bedes School and Parish Council. This whole event takes a lot of time and effort by a lot of dedicated volunteers. They do a great job every year and we are happy to be a small part of such a worthy effort. We feel this is just one of the ways we can help St Bede and our Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School system and Church Parishes. Tickets are only $1.00 per person so mark your calendars and get ready to have a great time.

Council 893            Crosses  Program

I think most of us are aware of our annual awarding of crosses to mainly children who are receiving their First Communion but not everyone is knowledgeable on how the program started the purpose and reason for the continued support. We will answer some of those questions and eliminate some curiosity.

The Ben and Alice Tokarz Memorial Scholarship

Background/History: This annual scholarship resulted from a vote of Council 893 to pay tribute to the memory of Alice Scanlon Tokarz, mother of Father David Tokarz, pastor of the Church of Saint Bede the Venerable and teacher at the Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School (MCPS). Council 893 had recently changed its meeting venue from the Queen of Mercy Parish to that of Saint Bede’s and the Council desired to indicate its appreciation for the warm reception given by Father Tokarz. Further, it was to be a positive indicator of their commitment to Catholic education by Council 893 of the Knights of Columbus. At that meeting, Council 893 voted to establish the scholarship in the amount of $500 and confirm it as a memorial (on-going) scholarship. It was to be presented by Council 893 of the Knights of Columbus to a selected graduating senior student of the MCPS.

"Breakfast with Moms"  and "Breakfast with Dads" 2011

In 2009 and 2010 the Knights of Columbus hosted a “Breakfast with Moms” and “Breakfast with Dads” on the Saturday before Mothers and Fathers Day. Looking to increase turn out and honor more Mothers and Fathers we worked with the Pastoral Council and Teen Café and at Fr Caruccis suggestion we held the Breakfast on the Sunday of Mothers and Fathers Day. The breakfasts were held after the 8:30am and 10:00am Masses

The breakfast meal consisted of pancakes, sausages, furnished and cooked by members of the Knights of Columbus. All other items coffee, milk, juices syrup plates and utensils were furnished by the Pastoral Council. The Knights, Pastoral Council and Teens served and cleaned up after the event. All feedback received indicated that the participants were very pleased with the changes made for the 2011 Moms and Dads Breakfast. We had at least 80 after each 8:30 Mass and 40 or so after the 10:30 Mass. Door prizes included Winn Dixie gift certificates, Hair styles and pedicures by Doug’s 2 and rounds of golf at Robert Trent Jones Trail donated by Raycom Media.

We are glad we could do something for such a special group of parishioners, our Mothers and Fathers. God bless you all for the important jobs you do raising our next generation. Congratulations to all that won a door prize. We are looking forward to next year’s event on the new days being even bigger and better.

Thanks to all the Knights, Pastoral Council members and Teens that showed up to help.
